The Fondation Cartier pour l’Art Contemporain organised the first Bruce Nauman major solo exhibition in France in over 15 years. For the occasion, the artist selected recent pieces never-before-shown in the country, along with some earlier installations created from a wide array of media that he has explored throughout his career.
The exhibition included rooms where sound and videos played a primordial role, presenting a design challenge. The catalogue presents these works through exhibition views, scores, notes and sketches carefully layered across different page sizes. By contrast to the work, the publication’s exposed binding and different booklet sizes offer a self-referential reminder of the physicality of a publication. Nauman’s word games are also playfully referenced with the typesetting on the cover, with letters overlapping on a tipped-on image.
