On the occasion of Carol Bove’s solo exhibition at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the studio designed a two-volume catalogue that extends the artist’s practice and functions as a book-object rather than simply a record of the exhibition. The publication is housed in a die-cut slipcase inspired by Bove’s geometric forms. It comprises two independent volumes: one bringing together scholarly essays, and the other presenting an artist’s book of carefully selected full-scale (1:1) glossy photographic details of her works, sequenced by the artist herself.
Scale is fundamental to Bove’s practice. Hence, the publication reproduces these images at their actual size, allowing the materiality and physical presence of the sculptures to be experienced on the page.
The colour palette draws from the artist’s work, creating a subtle continuity between the exhibition and the publication. In addition, the absence of a title on the cover challenges the conventions of the exhibition catalogue, allowing the object to be encountered first as an artwork rather than a publication. The restrained graphic language, generous pacing, and careful attention to materiality reinforce this intention, blurring the boundary between documentation and artistic expression.
Finally, each first-edition slipcase features a hand-applied cut-out paper element, individually pasted by the artist. Echoing the intuitive gestures of Bove’s collage practice, each copy becomes unique, transforming the catalogue into an artwork in its own right.
