The Book of Everything brings together over 600 images and diverse texts from the photographer Mary Ellen Mark’s extraordinary oeuvre. Conceived and edited by the film director Martin Bell, Mark’s husband and collaborator for 30 years, the book compiles the brilliant, intimate, provocative stories of characters the photographer met and engaged with from 1963 to her death in 2015. Bell selected images from Mark’s thousands of contact sheets and chromes—from over two million frames in total. These include her own now iconic choices, those published once and since lost in time, and some of her unpublished preferences.
Structured by decades over 880 pages, the book contains as of yet unpublished notes and insights from Mary Ellen Mark. Along her intimate notes, other texts are interspersed, representing the voices of the pictures’ subjects and Mark’s assistants and collaborators. Pairing these texts poetically with pictures, we also drew a bespoke display typeface for the titles. The display type was inspired by the rich, vernacular type found in some of Mark’s photographs, such as hand-painted signs in India.
