In 2022, Maison d’Art in Los Angeles presented Homage to the Circle, a duo-show of works by Kenneth Noland and Steven Parrino. The exhibition featured Noland’s circle paintings of the late 1950s through early ’60s alongside Parrino’s misshaped paintings of the 1990s and 2000s.
The design draws inspiration from deep space, black holes, vortexes and the gravitational pull. Every design decision was guided by these key concepts, which are central to the works of both artists featured in the book. An unprimed canvas material was used for the cover with Noland’s iconic circle printed directly onto the cloth. The metallic paint and deep blacks used in the artworks are also referenced in the book. The text is printed in silver ink on deep black pre-dyed paper, which contrasts with the ethereal feel of bible paper used for drawings and references. For the typography, ABC Gravity was chosen for its heavy shapes which borrow from the sans-serif typefaces of the ’60s and ’70s. These compressed forms create a sense of tension and pressure.
