Portable Art
Portable Art
Book
The exhibition Portable Art stemmed from the project of the same name, which was a collaboration between Celia Forner and 15 contemporary artists. She asked them to create objects defying the conventional definition of jewellery, sitting somewhere between sculpture and wearable art. The Portable Art Project includes unique pieces and editions crafted from traditional gold and silver with precious and semi-precious gems to enamel, aluminium, bronze, and iron. The initiative began with an invitation to Louise Bourgeois and has since evolved to include John Baldessari, Phyllida Barlow, Stefan Brüggemann, Subodh Gupta and many others.
While small in format, the book is neither apologetic nor quiet. The concept evolved from the notion that jewellery was intimately linked with displays of power, from royalty to religion. The cover is an extravagant velvety royal blue, evoking expensive fabric to the touch. Inside the book, the series of photographs by Gorka Postigo further heighten the drama. They capture the Spanish actress Rossy de Palma in a series of performative photographs. She engages with each work as an extension of her body and a tool for expressing identity. The titling typeface adds further camp to the publication, which conveys explosive energy.
