Dieter Roth was a prolific artist known for his unconventional approach to materials, creating artworks from the detritus of everyday life, including scraps, food, and found objects. His work often reflected his obsession with accumulation and decay, with many pieces evolving over time, becoming ephemeral and transformed by their own deterioration.
Roth Bar & Grill is a fully functioning, site-specific artwork within the Threshing Barn at Hauser & Wirth Somerset.
Created by artist Oddur Roth, grandson of the late German-born Swiss artist Dieter Roth, the bar is a dynamic and changing installation, composed of salvaged materials and objects from reclamation yards in the surrounding Bruton, inspired by the history of Durslade Farm.
Atelier Dyakova was entrusted with creating a distinctive visual identity for the restaurant. We drew inspiration from the bold simplicity of Dieter Roth’s work, while the ancient, rustic beam structure of the barn influenced the strong typographic approach.
We experimented with typography to create movement and strength, capturing the bar’s eclectic, honest character with an unadorned, rule-free approach.
