This exhibition catalogue for Victor Man’s The Lines of Life at the Städel Museum in Frankfurt was designed to reflect the artist’s connections to poetry and history.
The cover features Friedrich Hölderlin’s poem “To Zimmer” (1812) which highlights Man’s literary influences:
The lines of life are various,
Like roads, and the borders of mountains.
What we are here, a god can complete there,
With harmonies, eternal reward, and peace.
The poem was dedicated to Ernst Zimmer, a cabinet-maker who cared for Hölderlin during his period of mental estrangement (1807–1843). It serves as a poignant final verse of healing and hope, encapsulating the essence of Hölderlin’s life and writings.
The typography approach draws inspiration from illuminated manuscripts and the design of the cover echoes Tavolette di Biccherna of Siena, featuring intricate details and textures. These painted wooden covers, used to protect Siena’s financial books from the 13th to 18th centuries, were decorated with artwork celebrating the city and its people.
